The solar rebate, in actual dollars

The 'solar rebate' is really STCs: certificates your system earns that come straight off your quote. This calculator shows how many your system size earns in NSW and what they are worth right now.

STC questions, answered

What is an STC actually worth?

Small-scale Technology Certificates trade on an open market, usually a little under the $40 ceiling. After typical trading and admin costs most households net around $38 per certificate, which is the figure this calculator uses.

Do I have to claim STCs myself?

No, and you should not. Every reputable installer discounts the STC value off your quoted price and handles the paperwork. If a quote shows the full price with no STC discount, ask why.

Why does the rebate shrink every year?

STCs are calculated from the years remaining until the scheme ends in 2030, called the deeming period. Every January the deeming period drops by one year, so the same system earns fewer certificates. Installing this year beats installing next year.

Does the STC rebate stack with the battery rebate?

Yes. Panels earn STCs under the solar scheme, batteries earn a separate discount under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, and NSW adds its VPP incentive and interest-free loan on top. A combined solar and battery install can attract all of them at once.
