Short answer: yes, and not just any electrician. A home battery install in NSW needs a licensed electrician who also holds current accreditation for battery storage. The two are separate things, and the difference decides whether your federal discount is valid.
The two credentials that matter
A NSW electrical licence is the legal requirement to do electrical work. Every electrician on the job needs one, and it is issued by NSW Fair Trading.
Battery storage accreditation from Solar Accreditation Australia is the scheme requirement. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program only creates certificates when the install is signed off by an accredited installer. No accreditation, no certificates, no discount.
What the electrical work actually involves
- Switchboard assessment. Older boards often lack the space or the RCD protection a battery circuit needs. An upgrade is common and is a real cost, not an upsell.
- Isolation and protection. Batteries need dedicated isolation that emergency services can find and operate, correctly labelled.
- Metering. Depending on your setup and whether you are joining a VPP, your meter may need reconfiguring by your retailer.
- Grid connection approval. Your distributor has to approve the installation. In parts of NSW that approval carries export limits that change what the battery is worth to you.
- Inverter compatibility. If you already have solar, the existing inverter may or may not work with the battery being quoted. This is the most common source of post-deposit surprises.
Where a second opinion pays for itself
The electrician who comes with the battery salesperson has an interest in the sale going ahead. That does not make them wrong, but on a five-figure job it is reasonable to have the electrical side looked at independently — particularly the switchboard and the inverter compatibility question, which are where variations come from.

Can I install a battery myself?

Questions to ask before the deposit
- What is your NSW electrical licence number, and your SAA battery accreditation number?
- Has someone physically inspected the switchboard, or is this quote from photos?
- Is a switchboard or meter upgrade included, excluded, or unknown?
- Will my existing inverter work with this battery, or is it being replaced?
- Who applies for grid connection approval, and what happens if it is refused or export-limited?
- What is the installation date, and what happens to the rebate if it moves?
That last one matters more than it sounds. The federal rate is set by your installation date, and it steps down on 1 January 2027.
